National Get Caught Reading Month: Why Escaping Into A Book Still Matters

May marks National Get Caught Reading Month, a campaign created to celebrate reading for pleasure and encourage people to make books part of everyday life. First launched in 1999, it remains a simple idea with lasting appeal, be seen reading and make space for it more often.

At Cocktail & Book Club, what resonates most is not the visibility of reading, but what reading offers in return.

A good book can change the atmosphere of an ordinary day. It can turn a commute into another country, a rainy afternoon into somewhere sunlit, or an evening alone into something expansive. Some stories entertain, but the best ones transport.

That sense of escapism feels particularly valuable now. Reading asks us to slow down, focus, and step briefly outside the pace of everyday life. It creates room for imagination, curiosity, and the quiet pleasure of being absorbed by something fully.

We often talk about books as companions to mood, the novel you read beside a cocktail in a hotel bar, the paperback taken on holiday, the story that makes home feel larger than it is. Certain books become attached to places, while others create places of their own.

National Get Caught Reading Month is perhaps just a reminder of something readers already know: there are few luxuries as reliable as disappearing into a book for an hour.

So this month, read in the park. Read on the train. Read before dinner. Read somewhere beautiful, or somewhere ordinary that a book can transform.

Get caught reading, if only because it means you were somewhere else for a while.
