The Stories We Carry

Books are appearing in unexpected places lately, not just on bedside tables or café counters, but in fashion campaigns, accessories and wider cultural conversations.
Coach’s new Explore Your Story campaign places literature at the centre of its Spring collection, introducing miniature readable book charms and using storytelling as a form of self expression. It feels telling.
Because this is about more than accessories. It reflects a broader shift in what people want from the things they buy, personality, meaning and a sense of identity.
For years, luxury was often associated with visibility, speed, and excess. Now the most desirable things feel quieter, craftsmanship, individuality and objects that carry emotional value. A book represents all three.
Books have always said something about the people who carry them. The novel tucked into a handbag, the pages folded on a commute, the title left casually on a café table. They hint at taste, curiosity, mood and inner life without needing explanation.
Coach’s campaign understands that instinctively. Bags carry possessions, but they also carry symbols of who we are. Adding literature into that world feels less like novelty and more like recognition. Coach frames the collection around the idea that our stories give us courage, that the narratives we carry can shape confidence, identity, and how we move through the world.
At Cocktail & Book Club, we’ve always believed books shape atmosphere as much as identity. They spark conversation, set the tone of an evening, and often say more about a person than introductions do.
Perhaps that is why fashion is embracing literature again, because in an age of endless noise, depth has become aspirational. And because the stories we carry still give us courage.
